What is Marathon Therapy?
Marathon Therapy consists of back-to-back extended therapy sessions, usually lasting several hours a session, over a short amount of consecutive days. The couple and therapist enter a “marathon” of therapy where they devote significant time to dive into the couple’s issues and work on resolving the issues in a timely manner
Marathon Therapy is especially convenient for couples with difficult schedules or who are coming from out of town and are eager to address and resolve their issues immediately.
Who would benefit from Marathon Therapy?
Couples who are committed to each other and to their relationship, but who recognize on their own that they have obstacles to work out within their relationships. These couples already acknowledge their relationship issues, but are eager to start tackling and solving them right away. These couples are anxious for a long-term solution and are willing to put the hours in now to benefit their relationship in the long run.
Why is Marathon Therapy Effective?
In my experience, the more pain a couple is in when they enter therapy, the harder they are willing to work to improve things. Marathon therapy gives couples the opportunity to receive a full assessment of their relationship and become immersed in the Gottman method exercises quickly to then gain momentum to address a relationship crisis or past pain that has resulted in areas of core wounding. This momentum can give couples the hope and positive results early on to then build on or rebuild their relationship foundation going forward.
